Got an IRS notice or letter? What to do next
Most IRS notices are about a specific change, a balance due, or a question about your return. Reading it carefully and answering on time keeps your options open.
- Find the notice number (like CP14 or CP2000) in the corner of the letter.
- Look it up on the IRS page Understanding your IRS notice or letter to see what it means.
- Note the response date. Deadlines matter, especially for collection notices.
- Compare it with your return. If the IRS is right, pay or set up a payment plan. If not, respond with the documents the notice asks for.
- Get help if you are unsure, owe a large amount, or the notice mentions a levy or lien.

Common questions
How do I know if an IRS letter is real?
Real IRS notices come by mail and have a notice or letter number in the top or bottom corner. The IRS does not start contact by text or social media, and never demands payment by gift card or wire. Look up the number on the IRS notice page or call the number on IRS.gov, not one from a suspicious letter.
What if I disagree with the notice?
Follow the instructions on the notice and respond by the date shown. Keep copies of everything you send.
Can I get free help with an IRS notice?
Yes, if your income is low. Low Income Taxpayer Clinics represent people in audits, appeals and collection disputes with the IRS, for free or a small fee.
