Don't qualify for free tax help? Here are your options.

Free programs are built for lower incomes and simpler returns. If your income is over $89,000, your return is complex, or you have an IRS problem, you still have choices.

1. Still free: Fillable Forms

Free File Fillable Forms is free at any income if you can fill in the IRS forms yourself. It does not file state returns.

2. Paid software

Commercial tax software works for many people with W-2 income and investments. Prices often rise with each form you add, so check the price for your full return before you start.

3. A paid tax professional

CPAs, enrolled agents and tax firms prepare returns and can represent you with the IRS. Ask about the fee up front, check the preparer has a PTIN, and never sign a blank return.

Our partner: Pack Tax

A US tax firm that works with clients in every state by phone and video: tax return preparation, past-due returns, IRS notices, payment plans and other tax debt help.

Common questions

What can I do if I make too much for free tax help?

Free File Fillable Forms is free at any income. Beyond that, you can buy tax software, or hire a preparer such as a CPA, an enrolled agent, or a tax firm.

How do I check a tax preparer?

Ask for their PTIN (every paid preparer must have one), whether they are a CPA, enrolled agent or attorney, and how they charge. Never sign a blank return, and never let a preparer put their own bank account on your refund.

Do you get paid if I use Pack Tax?

Yes. Pack Tax is our paid partner; we may receive a fee for referrals. It does not change what we say about free programs. Full disclosure.
