  • File your own return: income under $89,000, current tax year.
  • Have it prepared: income about $69,000 or less through VITA, including some prior years.
  • Covers wages, self-employment income, dependents, education and home ownership. The self-file option also covers rental property.
  • Email, chat and phone support with IRS-certified VITA specialists.

Who it is not for

  • Income of $89,000 or more.
  • Rental property on the prepared-for-you (VITA) option.

How to get started

  1. Go to MyFreeTaxes.com and pick "File my own taxes" or "Have my taxes prepared".
  2. Gather your ID, Social Security cards or ITINs and official tax forms (W-2, 1099).
  3. Most self-filers finish in about an hour. Prepared returns take one to three weeks.
